The Gartner Magic Quadrant is a useful tool to help businesses evaluate their IT associates. The chart is based on extensive impartial research. It compares competitors from the IT industry, classifying them into leaders, challengers, visionaries or niche players.
Learning how to assess IT companies and the metrics used is important as a decision making tool. It’s especially important when building up new client relationships. Evaluating Power BI using the Gartner tool enables one to grasp its potential and current usefulness before purchase.
The Magic Quadrant summarises a company’s vision and execution of that vision. That vision is compared to market standards and other technologies in the same category.
The Leaders have both vision and executive ability. They demonstrate past success and show the ability to execute a plan according to today’s standards.
The Visionaries have a clear vision of where the market is heading but cannot clearly demonstrate execution of those ideas today. Or, they do not have an executive plan to achieve those goals. Examples of visionaries are Salesforce and Oracle.
Microsoft Power BI falls into the Leaders’ quadrant. The business intelligence tool is a powerful tool for insightful reports and interactive dashboard. It can help the sales, marketing, finance, operations or management teams in their decision making.
Power BI is collection of tools and services which facilitates the acquisition of data, data modelling, visualisations and reports. It also helps with the distribution of analytical solutions.
Power BI is used by many thousands of companies around the world. Microsoft has been consistently ranked a leader on Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Analytics and Business Intelligence Platforms. As indicated in the 2019 annual report, Power BI hosts more than 25 million models. It processes 12 million queries per hour, which is a pretty significant number.
The Aspiring Companies
The two other quadrants are the Challengers and the Niche players. Challengers are well-structured and have shown the ability to keep up with today’s standards. However they tend to fall short in the vision of what is in demand for tomorrow. Examples of challengers are TIBCO Software and MicroStrategy.
Niche Players are in the lower left quadrant of the chart. They are companies which specialise in a small section of the entire market. They do not present a clear vision for expanding. Examples of niche players are: Alibaba Cloud and IBM.
The Way Forward
More than 15,000 companies are listed as Gartner clients around the world. Gartner also contributes to determining the IT standards in place. It also has a hand in influencing market trends that will become a reality in the future. Its reach is global, being located in more than 100 countries.
It is a benchmark in the industry and allows deeper insights into service and product offerings from different vendors. IT leaders in the UK should use the Magic Quadrant as a decision making tool for vendor relationships. They can even use it to make smarter decisions about vendor products or services. The Magic Quadrant advises technology users.
