SharePoint 2013 Workflow Retirement

Aida Pandur

In order for Microsoft to continue providing modern, optimised solutions tailored to the era of digital transformation, SharePoint 2013 workflows will be phased out next year, following the end of life of SharePoint 2013 this April.

When will this happen?

  • SharePoint 2013 workflows will be turned off for new tenants from April 2, 2024.
  • SharePoint 2013 workflows will be fully retired as of April 2, 2026.

How to know if you are using any SharePoint 2013 workflows?

To determine whether your organization is utilising SharePoint 2013 workflows, you can use Microsoft Assessment Tool to scan your tenant for their usage. You can then determine:

  • All SharePoint 2013 workflows in the tenant, per site collection and site
  • Recency and volume of usage of SharePoint 2013 workflows
  • Lists, libraries and content types that use SharePoint 2013 workflows

What to do next?

While SharePoint 2013 workflows will be supported by SharePoint Server 2016 and 2019 until the end of their support periods, it is recommended you take action as soon as possible.

As a first step, you can turn off creation of any new SharePoint 2013 workflows to prevent further need for upgrading.

You should then prepare to migrate your workflows, the most convenient tool being Power Automate.
